Thorny shrubs such as rose bushes and scarlet fire thorns may have an untamed appearance no matter how well-groomed they are, but pruning them can keep them in shape. Removing only what’s appropriate is the key to keeping your shrubs healthy during the pruning process. And though donning a sturdy pair of Red Leather Gauntlet gardening gloves is a smart idea when working in any garden, it’s especially useful when dealing with a plant covered in thorns.
Prune deciduous shrubs that bloom in spring just after blossoming. This gives new growths a chance to harden off before winter chill hits. For summer-flowering deciduous shrubs, wait until late winter, such as February, to spark new growth.Perform heading cuts that remove top growth until all that remains is a basic branching framework in deciduous thorny shrubs that go bare in winter, such as rose bushes. Remove the multiple bare branches until all the remains is a thick, healthy system of topped-off shoots striking upwards from the ground. These shoots should grow new stems and flowers during the growing season.
Cut back dying stems to the base of the shrub. With most deciduous shrubs, this encourages fresh growths to emerge from the trunk of the shrub. Once the new growths appear, your thorny shrubs should look fuller and greener than they did before you pruned. Snap off dead flower clusters with your gloved fingers. Take care not to tear off the growth buds below the cluster, as these buds will produce new flowers during the next growing season.
Prune thorny evergreen shrubs in late winter or mid-summer. In mild climates, you can safely perform a light trim almost any time of year, as new growths aren’t as susceptible to weather injury as they would be in more extreme climates.Remove dead or disease-ridden branches entirely, when the weather is dry. Wet weather may encourage rot or similar problems as the shrubs are healing. Disinfect your shears before moving on to prune healthy branches.
Cut back gangly shoots to a bud or another natural spot on the branch. This is only necessary to keep evergreens well-shaped, as they don’t require pruning as much as deciduous shrubs do. If you prefer not to prune thorny evergreens, you can leave them to grow as they please without trimming at all.
